Season 8 – Session 5: “What Do We Know About Free Time?” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Dominique Baron-Bonarjee.

This November there will be two ‘Facilitated OPENLAB sessions. The first of these will be:

What Do We Know About Free Time?
with Dominique Baron-Bonarjee.

This session will take place on Friday 1 November, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

When time and space are scarce the emphasis is too often on production and the process is curtailed. In this session, we explore temporality and how the rhythms of daily routines, impact on thought and the creative process. I’m interested in developing an embodied sense of time, thinking of the body material as a time container.

Imagining different notions of time, Gilles Deleuze names two of them Chronos and Aeon (The Logic of Sense). The first, Chronos, is measured regular time which belongs to the world of the social, the second, Aeon, is circular expansive and encompasses deep time – it’s a temporality that can be encountered in solitude as well as altered states of consciousness such as the flow state: a state of effortlessness and timelessness associated with being involved in a work or leisure activity.

When we come into the studio how can we move between these temporalities the one that demands that we work, be productive, create outcomes and the other that requires surrender, intuition, inspiration, a beginner’s mind that goes beyond thinking? By drawing on Eastern philosophy and performance practices, (Butoh, Noh theatre, Tai Chi) this session proposes methods, tasks, improvisations, and discussions that address will and flow, personal agency, activity and passivity and dynamics and how these relate to experiences of embodied time.

Remember:

OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. We are looking for proposals for facilitated sessions during the Spring and Summer Terms 2020. If you’d like to facilitate one of these sessions in the future come to one of our sessions to find out more or email Antonio de la Fe.

The OPENLAB sessions alternate between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilitated OL sessions. You can see the full programme for the Autumn Term 2019 here.

The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a contribution of £7 for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OL sessions) and of £5 for the 2-hour long ones (‘White Canvas’). Cash only.
