Season 7, Session 21: “Enchanted Roots” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Maria da Luz Ghoumrassi.

The last ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ session of the Summer Term 2019 will be:

Enchanted Roots
with Maria da Luz Ghoumrassi.

This session will take place on Friday 5 July, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

“Oh, what a catastrophe, what a maiming of love when it was made personal, merely personal feeling. This is what is the matter with us: we are bleeding at the roots because we are cut off from the earth and sun and stars. Love has become a grinning mockery because, poor blossom, we plucked it from its stem on the Tree of Life and expected it to keep on blooming in our civilised vase on the table.”

― D.H. Lawrence

We all have heard stories of Enchanted forests with trees that walk and talk.
In fact, trees use their many senses to communicate, share food, care for and warn each other of danger. They do this because they need each other. Like us, they are social beings.

As a young person, I loved drawing trees and being surrounded by them, as I felt they were beautiful just as they are. After all, trees provide us with oxygen, food, mark the seasons, prevent soil erosion among many other important roles. I have been inspired by the metaphor of trees as humans ever since.

In this lab, we will have an opportunity to slow down, breathe deep, tuning in through our senses and explore our sense of belonging on this Earth. We will draw inspiration from a range of techniques and disciplines including movement, voice, storytelling, writing, drawing and object theatre. The aim is to search for a deeper connection within ourselves, with each other searching for a balance and harmony in the way we relate to our world.

This is part of an ongoing research performance practice, as I have been working with professional dancers and actors and diverse community groups. Part of my continuous professional development, I have been working with various multidisciplinary artists including Jacky Lansley, Peta Lily, Sharon Ama Wray, Urban Bush Women, Draw to Perform and many more.

Remember:

OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. If you’d like to know more about this, come to one of our sessions or email Antonio de la Fe.

The OPENLAB sessions alternate between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilitated OL sessions. You can see the full programme for the Summer Term 2019 here.

The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a contribution of £7 for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OL sessions) and of £5 for the 2-hour long ones (‘White Canvas’). Cash only.

Season 7, Session 19: “Intimacies” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Petra Söör.

The third ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ session of the Summer Term 2019 will be:

Intimacies
with Petra Söör.

IMG_3746

This session will take place on Friday 7 June, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

In this session, I would like to suggest an exploration, through my current interests in relation to the subject of intimacies. I would like to propose different states of attention and different ways of engaging in witnessing and knowing ourselves and one another by focusing on body, movement, breath and touch.

Is it possible to experience a sense of intimacy in witnessing the very aliveness of another being and its unique expression; including animal and plant life, water and soil – life that is often assumed as inanimate?

In exploring together what is present in the very moment that we meet, we can also consider and explore intimacy in relation to events, occurrences and bodies we might perceive as being detached from or far away or at a distance.

Can different forms of intimate relationships speak to our empathic body and act as a counterpoint to sense of detachment, isolation, stagnation, automated and mechanised relationships and behaviour?

Maybe from this place, different layers of intimate connection and relationships of exchange can be perceived, a recognition of already existing in intimate reciprocity through our place in the living matrix of life and as part of dynamic, energetic and self-organising systems with a possibility consider our role in how they transform.

Within the propositions of this OPENLAB session please be welcome to meander, wander, wonder, ponder…

This session will be followed by a facilitated night walk – meeting point at 9.30 pm in Hampstead Heath Overground Station, lasting approximately 1.5-2 hours. Feel free to join this walk even if you can’t make the morning session or come to both.

This session will take place on Friday 24 May, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

My white electric guitar, and the way she is played, stands in for a series of out-of-body experiences had in the Icelandic Highlands. A place in which I walked, day after day, searching for a black field once glimpsed, then lost amid the glacial tundras. Finally arriving, I burnt the shirt from my back as an offering to that wild, willful, yet tender place…

This time reverberates through the sounds of the guitar and seems like all time.

Played with found objects gathered from remote environments, from Iceland to Joshua Tree, and city back streets, from Hollywood to Hackney. The slightest shifts in motion across the strings are fed and amplified through a peddle; echoing, reflecting and expanding their presence on the exhumed body-landscape of a sublime beauty caught in rapture at her own continual disintegration.

Held within the textures of these assembled objects rests the subtlety of the material world, and our shared encounter with its fragility and duration. If there is an essence here, it lies within that and the subtle interplay of ecology. This is what I invite the OPENLAB participants to sink into and share; to journey together and explore our own individual practices through a dense soundscape alive with potential.

This work when performed in a live context is, at times, accompanied by spoken word.

Participants and interested parties can listen to a recording here www.charlottewendylaw.net/LIES.html

In the Summer Term the ‘White Canvas’ sessions will fall on Fridays 10 May, 21 June and 19 July 2019. These will always take place from 10 am to 12 pm in the Research Studio at Chisenhale Dance Space.

At the ‘White Canvas’ sessions, there are no outspoken facilitators. This means that each person is responsible and free for their own facilitation. The idea is: “don’t be shy and do your own thing, put in practice your own performing and let your idiosyncrasy dictate your own work… or not.” In each session, there will be a regular openlabber participating in the session and at the same time, they will act as “an anchor” for those in the room needing support and/or guidance.

At the OPENLAB’s ‘White Canvas’ sessions there are no rights or wrongs, just the joy of coming to the room and sharing the space with others, both influenced and yet unaffected by them… or is that impossible?

Remember:

Sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

Sessions can be facilitated by any participant of OPENLAB. If you’d like to facilitate one of these sessions in the future send an email to Antonio de la Fe: antonio.delafeguedes@gmail.com

The OPENLAB sessions alternate between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilated OPENLAB’ sessions. You can see the full programme for the Spring Term 2019 here.

Season 7, Session 16: “Charco – A Call for Care” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Pepa Ubera.

The first session of the Summer Term 2019 will be a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB:

Charco – A Call for Care
with Pepa Ubera.

Pepa Ubera

This session will take place on Friday 26 April, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

In this session, I would like to share some of the questions and choreographic scores I have been developing in a residency I undertook at the beginning of the year in Australia.

Charco is a call for care in order to deal with the anthropogenic changes that WE, humans have caused on Earth. I have been searching and designing choreographies that challenge places of stagnation in society (charcos) and the behaviours that stop us from thinking of life as a space of wonder and experimentation. Socio-political choreographic practices have the potential to empower people by asking them to trust their caring and intellectual capacities. This research embraces choreography as the capacity to read the body of society in an anthropological way, to recognise what is currently at stake, to see which problems need attention and how social constraints are supported by the body.

What’s OPENLAB?

OPENLAB is a model for professional self-development for performers devised by Antonio de la Fe. It hosts open sessions for anyone interested in a shared space for performance practice. In this way, OPENLAB could be understood as a co-working space for performers. At the same time, OPENLAB proposes a frame of work that revolves around a basic question: what does ‘to perform’ entail?

OPENLAB’s model is fluid: always changing, always open to dialogue within the group. OPENLAB sessions are developed by a constantly changing group of people. Any person can join the group at any time according to their personal needs and circumstances. Each member of the group may use these sessions the best way they suit them. Generally, the members of the group are artists interested in performance, movement, the body and in the actions the body can deploy as an artistic medium.

What’s the difference between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilitated OL sessions?

OPENLAB will continue alternating between ‘White Canvas’ sessions and ‘Facilitated OL sessions.

‘White Canvas’ sessions don’t have an outspoken facilitator or pre-decided theme. We will aim to have a participant in the studio that will serve as an anchor for other participants who may feel they need it. Participants may still be responsible for their own time in the studio but this time they’ll have not only the support from doing it with others but also the support from the anchor person. The possibility of ad lib exchange within the group is also always there. ‘White Canvas’ sessions are 2-hour long.

‘Facilitated OL are sessions with a theme and a facilitator guiding the group throughout. ‘Facilitated OL sessions are 3-hour long.

All sessions take place at Chisenhale Dance Space and are pay-what-you-can (recommended donation £5 for the ‘White Canvas’ and £7 for the ‘Facilitated OL sessions).
