Performing Anger
with Catherine Duquette.

This session will take place on Friday 5 April, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

Times are uncertain. People are angry. This OPENLAB session is a call to arms.

Anger has taken center stage over the last two years, spurring support for and opposition against dramatic political shifts and social movements in the UK and beyond, generating what some call the Age of Anger. In this OPENLAB session, we will dive into our current emotional climate and revel in a participatory ode to anger.

We will explore anger under the influence of play to encourage risk-taking and to bring joy to a potentially heavy subject. Open to performers and non-performers alike, we’ll start with interactive games and improvisational exercises, move into persona and status play, experiment with creative ranting, and conclude with partnered observation and mirroring. We will practice and dissect familiar exchanges, scores, and movements in the media and in our everyday lives.

What makes you angry? How do you express it? Please be prepared to share your own experiences. We will map out our observations and explore how we perform anger, how we deny it, and most importantly, how we move through it to galvanise and uplift ourselves and others.

Remember:

OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. If you’d like to know more about this, come to one of our sessions or email Antonio de la Fe.

The OPENLAB sessions alternate between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilated OL sessions. You can see the full programme for the Spring Term 2019 here.

The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a contribution of £7 for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OL sessions) and of £5 for the 2-hour long ones (‘White Canvas’). Cash only.

Season 7, Session 14: “Alone Together” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Irene Cena.

March’s ‘Facilitated OPENLAB will be:

Alone Together
with Irene Cena.

This session will take place on Friday 22 March, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

How to create a space in which people can self-regulate, self-direct, interact with self-environment-others without being told what to do? What are the norms that emerge in such a space, what games and rules come into being and dissolve?

Can aspects of our biology support our self-acceptance and collaboration?

Where can I place my attention to support an open structure to emerge?

The background idea for this workshops emerges from an embodied reflection on an element of our immune system: the Major Histocompatibility Complex. This marker protein is essentially a mechanism for self recognition, as well as playing part in the identification of threatening organisms, and is therefore a place of discernment.
My interest is how the embodiment of this sub-cellular structure can support relationship with self and other.

As a workshop facilitator my intention is to provide a space in which people can find their inner guiding force, instead of looking outside themselves to be ‘lead’. After an introduction to help us come into contact with a deeper concentration the emphasis will be on following our inner intuition and be open to what emerges.

Together we will create a space for the unknown to manifest, through non-doing, non-directing, silence, being.

As needed I will offer some touch and somatisation techniques, combined with rudiments of anatomy and physiology to support our entry into the exploratory mind. As the exploration takes off some materials will be available for expression through other media.

Season 7, Session 12: “Circlusion and the Sounding Body” – a ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Laura Burns.

Circlusions and the Sounding Body
with Laura Burns.

This session will take place on Friday 15 February, 10 am-1 pm at Chisenhale Dance Space’s Research Studio.

We will work with sound as a material that reads the world. As touch, as direction, as proximity and distance, as the vibration of the material out of which my body, your body, our body e/merges. Sound as an activation of self through relation; as an attendance to matter.

We will explore sound in and through the figure of the hag – a sheila-na-gig type entity and archetypal presence who ingests, digests and swallows the world in an act of circlusion – not passive, but calling forth and dragging in, in order to alchemise, transform, dissolve. We work with the notion of stewardship not ownership; what moves moves through and only be/longs in this constantly shifting ushering in of which we are a small part. We move with the hag as a maker of the world not through production and generation, but as a site for digesting and transforming, swallowing the material back into the immaterial and moving from there.

All levels of experience welcome.

Moving is a kind of thinking and thinking is a kind of moving. They both happen in different combinations of simultaneity and quasi-simultaneity, combinations of sequentiality and possibly, even in instances of isolation. Always intertwined but with different patterns and yet always expressions of enactive ways of being and being present.

Antonio de la Fe will bring to the room their long-lasting interest in the performing state while dancing as an action of presence and some of the strategies they’ve been using for the last couple of years to achieve and work on this.

You can expect moving, being still, thinking, talking, writing and in different orders and combinations in time and space.

In the Spring Term the ‘White Canvas’ sessions will fall on Fridays 11 January, 1 February and 8 March 2019. These will always take place from 10 am to 12 pm in the Research Studio at Chisenhale Dance Space.

At the ‘White Canvas’ sessions, there are no outspoken facilitators. This means that each person is responsible and free for their own facilitation. The idea is: “don’t be shy and do your own thing, put in practice your own performing and let your idiosyncrasy dictate your own work… or not.” In each session, there will be a regular openlabber participating in the session and at the same time, they will act as “an anchor” for those in the room needing support and/or guidance.

At the OPENLAB’s ‘White Canvas’ sessions there are no rights or wrongs, just the joy of coming to the room and sharing the space with others, both influenced and yet unaffected by them… or is that impossible?

On Friday 11 January, Antonio de la Fe will be the anchor for the session. Other anchors for the all other ‘White Canvas’ sessions in the autumn to be confirmed.

Remember:

Sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

Sessions can be facilitated by any participant of OPENLAB. If you’d like to facilitate one of these sessions in the future send an email to Antonio de la Fe: antonio.delafeguedes@gmail.com
