  2. A ‘Facilitated OL’ session on Friday 2 March with Joe Stevens: Games of Utopia – Paper Games, a three-hour long session, 10 AM-1 PM
  3. And a ‘White Canvas’ session on Friday 23 March 2018, 10 AM-12 PM

All three sessions will take place in the Research Studio at Chisenhale Dance Space.

Games of Utopia – Paper Games

Game of Utopia: Paper Games presents three paper-based situations each lasting an hour. This session will explore the theme of game design and game performance for three hours on Friday 2 March, from 10am to 1pm. The participants and myself (as facilitator) will become collaborative game designers and competitive game players within the materials and suggestions that are my three starting points for development: Paper Planes, Wine Skittles and Wine Maker, all taking place on a large grid representing the field of play.

Paper Planes offers 4 different player types an alternately sized and coloured paper plane, ranging from A5 size up to A2. Wine Skittles displays a triangle of different sized towers (think ten-pin bowling) ready to be flamboyantly toppled by creatively made projectiles. Wine Maker allows the participants to draw on what has been learned to generate a new game using the same materials.

About Joe Stevens:

I am the Wine Man. My philosophy and lifestyle are to carry out the algorithm found within the original Wine Games program, functioning as a set of instructions suggesting further work. As a self-professed artist, athlete and academic I produce visuals, performances and writings in various combinations. After graduating with an MA in Interactive Media from Goldsmiths in 2007, my work has been included in exhibitions, opening events, residences and publications both at home and abroad.

Recent relevant projects (all 2017) include The Rough Sketches Project: Dystopian Realities in London, which was produced by 3s A Crowd and hosted by Ugly Duck.  Us and Them #10: Sk(In) Too Deep in Leicester for Tetrad Collective at Attenborough Arts Centre. The Playful Escape in London with Antidote at Deptford Lounge and Provocative Pedagogies at the University of Lincoln. At all of these events, I presented a version of the same work: Game of Utopia.

Remember:

OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. If you’d like to know more about this, come to one of our sessions or email Antonio de la Fe (antonio.delafeguedes@gmail.com).

The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a £7 contribution for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OL’ sessions).
